Sparse Beamforming Design for Network MIMO System with Limited Backhaul Binbin Dai Master of Applied Science Graduate Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering University of Toronto 2014 This thesis considers a downlink multicell cooperation model in which the basestations (BSs) are connected to a central processor via rate-limited backhaul links and each scheduled user is cooperatively served by a potentially overlapped cluster of BSs. Two different problem formulations are considered respectively: optimal tradeoff between the total transmit power and backhaul capacity under fixed user rate constraints, and utility maximization for given per-BS power and backhaul constraints. Motivated by the compressive sensing literature, we propose to approximate the backhaul rate as a function of the weighted `2-norm square of the beamformers. This novel idea allows the optimal tradeoff to be converted into a weighted power minimization problem, which then can be solved efficiently using the well-known uplink-downlink duality approach; it also makes the utility maximization problem solvable through a generalized weighted minimum mean square error approach. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithms is justified through numerical simulation results.

On the value of data sharing in constrained-backhaul network MIMO

This paper addresses the problem of cooperation in a multicell environment where base stations wish to jointly serve multiple users, under a constrained-capacity backhaul. Such a constraint limits, among other things, data sharing and network MIMO concepts need to be revised accordingly. More precisely, we focus on the downlink, and propose to use the backhaul to transmit several messages to ea...

Large-scale Multi-user Mimo Approach for Wireless Backhaul Based Hetnets

In this paper, we consider the optimization of wireless capacity-limited backhaul links in future heterogeneous networks (HetNets). We assume that the HetNet is formed with one macro-cell base station (MBS), which is associated with multiple small-cell base stations (SBSs). It is also assumed both the MBS and the SBSs are equipped with massive arrays, while all mobiles users (macro-cell and sma...

Millimeter-wave Gbps Broadband Evolution towards 5G: Fixed Access and Backhaul

As wireless communication evolves towards 5G, both fixed broadband and mobile broadband will play a crucial part in providing the Gbps infrastructure for a connected society. This paper proposes a Millimeter-wave Gbps Broadband (MGB) system as the solution to two critical problems in this evolution: last-mile access for fixed broadband and small cell backhaul for mobile broadband. The key idea ...
